Here's What I Did ---- Now What?
I have a 55G that has been set up for 3 mos. Have a sump, precision marine skimmer and corner overflow. I run 440W VHO lights for 12 hrs. I have been hearing THE clicking noise for about 2 mos. I have lost most of hermits & all snails (was 50 each) to some mysterious happening. This last weekend I did the following:
25% water change added 1" aragonite sand to existing 3" - on top reduced LR from 101# to 54# dipped each rock in tap water for 3 min and rinsed with RO water took all creatures to LFS to babysit for me What, if anything, should I do now? Will it cycle? I only found a Hairy Crab with this procedure so have concluded that I must have a Pistol Shrimp that remained in the sand. Hope this won't be a problem on down the road. Or...............the bad guy went with the extra LR back to LFS. Tank was too crowded with that much rock. When can I add my Blue Star, Flame Shrimp and Emerald Crab back to the tank? |

I agree with Northman....sounds like a Mantis....Pistol shrimp are generally not that aggressive. You might want to first try and isolate the area that the noise is coming from, then wait until about an hour or so after the tank lights are shut off and go in there with a flashlight and shine on the area where you heard the noise coming from. If you see him then you will want to get an ID wether it is a mantis or a pistol. If you have a mantis then there are traps you can buy to possibly trap him...or the best way if you are sure he is in a hole inside a rock is to try and take that rock out w/him in it and do a high salinity dip and he will come right out of the rock. Here is a picture of a mantis shrimp
and more pics of mantis are at: http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/pics.htm and here is a pic of a Pistol shrimp HTH ![]() |
