sponges

I'm looking for information on keeping decorative sponges. I did check out a couple of books, but they were somewhat vague on how to properly care for one. I understand they are nonphotosynthetic, but beyond that, am unsure of their requirements.
Thanks in advance,

I dont know much on the subject of sponges. I do know that most will grow under a rock and in dark places. (mine anyway) I also think you need a level of nitrates to keep them growing.? sorry, thats all I've got

Here is a four inch Orange sponge I have had for about a year. I feed MicroVert twice per week. I keep the sponge in a low light area, so that it doesn't get overgrown with any algae. It is imperative that you never expose them to any air when transferring them from tank to tank. Good luck.

just curious

Reinhold- this has nothing to do with the sponge (although it's a very beautiful specimen) but I was just wondering if you have a sump or refugium on your system?

Hi bongobrian:

I have a low-tech 60 gallon show tank. (Meaning tall and narrow.) I have a 4" DSB, 60 lbs of LR, and a Magnum 350 running reef carbon 24/7. I run a Remora Pro HOT skimmer and two Maxijet 1200 PH's. I add B-Ionic calcium and buffer daily. No sump or refugium (yet.)

Firefish and Reinhold,
how is the current around the sponge? Low, high, pointed across it or right at it?
Thanks again

Low to moderate current blowing across the sponge.

Ya, low in my tank to, it's growing between the rock and glass where there is very little current.
