Humane thing to do ?

I have a Pearly Jawfish that I guess has gone blind. I noticed he started getting skinny and hovering at the top of the water. After observing him for a few weeks I think he must be blind. He can only "smell" his food and eat it. I have fattened him up by basically overfeeding the tank but this cannot go on for long as it will cause problems. So what do I do ? All other inhabitants are fine. There are no visible signs of stress to the fish.

I'd say if you can still get him to eat, then keep him till the end bro!

I have heard that if you do want to do the "right" hing that a good way to do it is this.
Put your fish in a ziplock bag with some water and then put it in the freezer. If I remember corerctly the fishes body will slow down and it will basically just go to sleep.

freezing to death sounds slow and horrible to me,if you want him to go quick just smash him with a hammer....

how about giving him to someone with a lion?

but really i agree with bongo, cant you hand feed him ,so you dont have to over feed?

It seems as though I have heard of the "freezing" technique before as well. Since fish are cold blooded, their bodies should slowly adapt to the surrounding water. Whether it tortures them or not, I am not sure. If it were me, I would try to keep him around as long as possible.

Organic...I actually agree with you as violent as it sounds.
Everyone talks about freezing to death. I dont care if it slows their metabolism down would you want to be frozen to death?????????

IM sure it cant feel good. I would think....say dropping a brick on it from the room would be quick and painless or putting it in a bag under your back tire and whammo...I was just thinking of the most painless and quickest ways one day as I was debating putting down a yellow tang...but alas..in a rock working frenzy, the tang went nutso and virtually killed itself..what a shame really.

As for the jawfish, sorry to hear about it. To be honest, I agree that if its still eating, let it be. Hell I had a blind dog that ate and we kept it till it died(which was about 5 years after it went blind). I couldnt imagine putting it down for that reason. If it becomes sickly and knocking on deaths door though, it probably is best to put it down.

HTH
