Sand (calicium sulfate)

I have a friend that is setting up a reef tank. He was originally going to use Silca based sand and I have suggested he try using Calcium based sand instead (SouthDown)

His wife works for a local fuse manufacture and she has access to a Calicium Sulfate sand. Is this safe? Supposivly it is clean.
