refugium ?
since i got the mandarin, i was thinking about how nice it would be to have a refugium, and this afternoon, i found an extra 10 gal laying around. would the trouble of setting up a 10 gal refugium be worth it? i just thought it would be nice for the mandarin to have a steady source of natural food (even though he eats frozen

Just my 2 cent worth but,
"somethings better then nothing" I would say use as large of a tank for the refugium as pos. You pick up small tanks from Petco, etc. for pretty cheap, 10g=$10 20g=$20 etc. . I plan for a 30g DIY refugium for my 105g main tank PS: I have made a couple of diagram of my plan if any one want to check out Mark |

Hey FishKid!
I give it a thumbs up! In fact, the constant live food source is vital to long term sucess of keeping Madarins. As DINHOUSE mentioned, some will adapt to brine but the live source is more desirable.
Set that 10gal up! Good day, Scott Z. |

Very cool idea FishKid, I am thinking about doing something similar, and putting some seahorses in it. I love the mandarin idea.. very cool.

i gotta stick with the 10 gal because of weight problems... I was pondering if it would be better (considering my circumstances) to instead of starting a refugium, to start free standing a 10 gal copepod farm (which can turn into a full blown nano later on
)?if i go that way, what should i do as far as filtration, circulation, stocking, and lighting? mark |

I run a 10g refugium on my 30g reef and it is teaming w/pods, It has a 4-5 inch sand bed, and clear full of mixed macros. I run a 65w LOA on it 24/7. It has been set up for around 3 months now. The tank has improved so much since I added this, it is just unreal, I have never done anything that improved my tank this much
