Question Question on cycling

Hi!

Well, let me see if my understanding of cycling is correct. First ammonia spikes, and that is broken down to Nitrate which then experience a spike, and is intern broken down into Nitrite which is the final spike the tank experences before it finishes its cycling.

This is what my tank is doing, Ammiona first spike, reaching four, and has dropped down to .25. Then both nitrate and nitrite went off the chart. Now Nitrate has begun to come down(it is half of what it was yesterday) and nitrite is still very high. This is normal right? all this has taken place in 9 days.

My tank is a 3 gallon, 35 GPH flow, Filter with carbon, Filter floss, and bio wheel. The tank currently contains 1.5 pounds of LR, and 3 pounds of live sand. I am really excited, every thing seems to be going so well and the white fungus is no more!!!

Andy

First you get an ammonia spike. Then Nitrite, then nitrate. After ammonia and nitrite are zero and nitrate is low (mine was less than 10) Add your clean up critters.

Ya, u just about got it right...just one letter, nitIte then nitrAte...in that case everything sounds OK. Commenting on orion's post, I would add your clean up critters after your Ammonia and nitrIte readings are at zero...HTH

Ok, let me get this right, Nitrate is N03, and nitrite is NO2. right? so NO2 breaks down into NO3? ALl i know is that my NO3 levels are dropping and my NO2 levels are remaing high.
