Most hydroponic lamps are lower colour temperature than what's sold for reef tanks.
My 1000w metal halides are 4200K and I see people with reef type halides at 10 to 20,000K From my experience, they still work, but don't look as nice as they're a little yellow compared to the reef lamps.

The ballasts and the fixtures will be the same though. However, the reflectors made for the Aquaria trade better suit the spread we look for.
