problem I can't go skimmerless, any ideas?
I am re-doing the 55 and I wanted to go skimmerless this time. I was going to use my old 20 long for a refug/sump and put it in the stand-BIG PROBLEM it wont fit! I have a 10 gal that will but I don't think that is enough volume to go skimmerless. So what do I do. Someone recommended one of those hang on prizim skimmers and just put a DSB in the 10 gal w/some micro algae and let'er rip. Should I just forget the sump and just put a good skimmer on it like a Red SeaBerlin or something? Help!!

Napolean- I was facing the same problem with my 46 gallon. I wanted to use a 20 gallon as a sump/refugium under my stand but it wouldn't fit. What is the largest footprint that will fit under your stand? mine turned out to be 24x10 maximum. I ended up going with an EcoSystem refugium that is exactly those measurements. They're expensive, but definitely work well IMO and they come with everything you need. Check out www.ecosystemaquarium.com
The 10 gallon would work, but for a 55 gallon I wouldn't have just a 10 gallon sump/refugium and nothing else. You are probably going to need a skimmer on top of that. It's hard to say, it really depends on your livestock and how much you feed the tank. Another option is to put the sump/fuge off to the side or above your main tank. If you have the room, this is a perfectly acceptable solution. Other than that, you would probably need to buy a new stand that would accomodate a larger tank.

I think you could do it with the 10g, you would just need to silicone some baffles in there. You can look at my site under the refugium/sump section and it shows one way to do it. The only other alternative i think you may have would be to put the refugium outside of the stand, this could be beneficial cuz you could make it gravity feed, thus having less stress on the pods entering the main tank....and if your anything like me then you will enjoy spending just as much time enjoying your refugium as you will your main tank!
