Chemistry Q, or: Do I need remedial math?

I guess mathmatical properties have changed since I was in school. Foolishly I thought that if I mixed equal amounts of seawater at 1.024 sg (32+ ppm) and freshwater at 1.000 sg (0 ppm) I would get end up with water at 1.012 sg (16+ ppm). Not so. I have to mix salt to fresh at about three-to-one to get what I'm after. Huh? I am culturing rotifers and need the culture water to be at about 1.014 according to "the experts", in case you were wondering.
