My corraline algae has so far encrusted about 20% of the back glass on my tank. It always starts as purple dots, sizes range from 1/8th to 1/2". I am noticing that on alot of the centers of these dots that the corraline has gone away. The color looks lavander. What's going on? My calcium level is at 475ppm, KH at 11. Lighting is 3 250watt 10K MH's and 2 72" actinics. I did change my MH's about 2 months ago. I had 3 175w 6500K Iwasaki's.

Hi Medman
Im doing some studies on my corralline algae, as I have made my own lace rock and am trying to seed it with Coralline (going good so far) From my experience I have seent the colors start off mainly purple or green and they do change the purple seems to get a darker purple or green may merge with a patch of purple and one may overlap plating effect...I have seen mine get a light lavender on the back of glass Like you mentioned....I havent really come to any scientific conclusions on WHY it does this but I know it hasnt affected my coralline growth anywhere else....it seems to only really be doing that on my back glass....maybe its relative to other things...possibly film algae competing? |

Medman,
I is not unusual for calcareous algae on glass to do this. As along as your CA and alkalinity parameters are good (yours are) and it appears to be growing well on your live rock, it is nothing to be concerned about.
