sifting gobies

may sound like a dumb question
but this is the best place to get an answer. .
are sand sifting gobies, like diamond gobies or something good for the tank with DSB?
or will they just kill/eat fauna?
thanks

I have had tanks with DSB'S and never use gobies that sift. Add in some hermits and they will do the job without ruining your dsb.

Sifting gobies won't disturb the fauna that much, but they will put sand all over the rocks and corals. Sure, they keep the sand white as snow, but the rest of the tank will look like a winter wonderland unless you do frequent cleaning with a turkey baster. Fun to watch these fish but probably not worth the hassle.

My outlook on this is that if you want one then wait atleast a year or so until your tank has matured....or else the SB fauna will never be able to keep up with the appetite your gobie has. Another approach is you may be able to have one sooner if you setup a refugium that will be undisturbed of SB fauna which would feed the main display.....At first you would want to supply a nice amount of live brine shrimp to the gobie to discourage eating the SB fauna...and if at all possible try to feed him other things like spirulina, frozen brine etc. My yellow watchman gobie got flushed into my refugium through the Overflow tube Poor guy spent about 2 weeks in the overflow (i couldnt get him out) well now he is the MASTER of the refugium he loves it cuz there is so many pods and bugs there....I was worried about him depleting the life there...but my main tank has tons of pods and bugs too....so it works out good...and he deserves it!
