i just setup my reef system about a month ago in
an fortyfive gallon acrylic. it has a built overflow bio ball setup that is like a seprate behind the tank . is this all i need? ive heard some stuff about a protein skimmer. should i use this in conjuction? |

I don't personally like trickle style filters. That is my bias here. I Have a 65 galo setup wih out a skimmer. I use an ecosystem. This method relies on a "mud" and caulerpa to export nutriens from the water. My reef is doing well. also have a sall bioload. Four fish. I think in your case a skimmer is a good option. A good HOB berlin turbo skimmer will suffice. This will help export the organics quickl and maintai good water quality.

Im w/ Mrok...Junk the bioball setup and go with a real good skimmer and a refugium.
