Yellowheaded Jawfish OK for a reef ?
I was wondering if anyone has ever kept a yellowheaded
jawfish in there reek tank ? I have always wanted to keep one of these and was just reading that they should be the first fish in a new setup. I received a detritivore kit from IPSF this week and am going to wait for about a week. \ mortman

Thanks for the reply organicreefer. I must have read ever thread
on this site by now. I just wanted to make sure that they would be a good reef fish. I'm not going to keep many fish. So, I want some entertaining species. I read that jawfish are like filter feeders, is that right?? mortman

Did you read that they like to pickup mouth fulls of sand and spew it all over the tank. I had two in my 55 for a few days, I couldn't take it anymore and sent them back the LFS.......just thought I would let you know in advance.

I WAS WATCHING A COUPLE OF YELLOWHEADED GOBIES
YESTERDAY. THEY WERE BLOWING SAND ALL OVER THE PLACE. ARE THE JAWFISH SIMILAR TO THE GOBIES??? MY MAIN CONCERN RIGHT NOW IS GETTING MY DSB HEALTHY. I'VE ADDED A DETRITVORE (IPSF'S) AND WAS THINKING ABOUT THE JAWFISH NEXT. MORTMAN

They need a deep coarse substrate in order to build their burrows. If you have a substrate of fine sand..this will not work because their burrows will collapse.

fine sand is a great substrate for jawfishes...just make sure to provide small rubble /cc/shells for them to line their "burrow's"
and as for youre concerns about the dsb "critters" ,youll be fine ,jawfishes arent sand sifters, they are plankton pickers, and take their food from the water column. they just like to dig a hole to live in ,and might even dig two or three.they will dig and make a "mess" once in a while, but generally once they have a couple holes they pretty much settle down in that area. |

IMO fine sand is NOT a great substrate for these fish.

Re: Yellowheaded Jawfish OK for a reef ?
I heard Jawfishes can be in 3/4 fine substrate and 1/4 rugged substrate. I would probably do that since I already have fine sand substrate but I want a Jawfish.

Make sure you have an appropriate hood of some sort, they WILL jump. I had a blue-dot jawfish jump through eggcrate and dry up on the floor.

I don't believe so considering the nature of the joke.

Ahh. I didn't catch the joke.
![]() Should I use the 3/4 fine sand and1/4 crushed coral though? A few people say only fine, a few people say only crushed coral, and some say a mixture. Which is it? |

Re: Yellowheaded Jawfish OK for a reef ?
I like some larger particles in my sandbed but not a whole lot. Maybe a handful of rubble or something like that here and there. It seems to hold a new sandbed in place better until everything settles. I like a variety of sizes.
