They are no more prone to ich than many other species of tangs, and are considered by some to be one of the hardier species. They are also one of the more aggressive/territorial tangs so care must be used in adding anything after them. I have a small juvenile now that is in quarantine undergoing hyposalinity for a mild case of ich he displayed four days after I purchased him. He is set to be re-introduced to the main tank this coming weekend. He has remained bold, active and is a great eater. Truly outstanding fish for reefs or FO tanks.

My PT is great and tough as nails. He survived a wipeout of my tank last year when I lost everything to ich. They require a diet rich in vitamin A and C. If you don't feed it macro algae on a continous basis, be sure to supplement its food with vita-chem and Zoecon (or something similar).
PTs are prone to HLLE (head and lateral line erosion). A vitamin-deficient diet is probably the cause in most cases. Some believe that a tank that is not properly grounded can also cause this problem. The other downside is that they are extremely territorial. The easiest way to deal with this is to put him in last. I've had to move mine to the q-tank for a few weeks when introducing new fish. This method worked fine for everything except a foxface.

I just sold my PT a week ago. It WAS very territorial !! So much so that it would go toe to toe with a 2' zebra moray eel I had. It was very adept at using it's spike. It killed a young copper banded butterfly and a 2 spot gobie. And to add insult to injury it would rob my corals of their food (krill) even though the PT couldn't eat it. It still raises my blood pressure to think about that fish.

You can feed PT's with HLLE broccolie, usually cures it quickly....
