This might sound a little petty, but is there a list of LFS's here that seem to either knowingly (negligently or out of lack of knowledge) sell non reef safe animals to reefers, even if the reefer specifically asks whether it is reef safe or not......Now I know I'm probably going to get flamed with buyer beware and you should have done research and the like, but c'mon...are they just allowed to put one over on anyone. And just FYI, I did (in my case) do some research, but I guess what I found was too preliminary and should've been more indepth.
Okay..that's my b**ch session. |

Reefdope,
I have been in this hobby for going on 18 years now and I have never seen a LFS that wasn't in for the money. I too live in the LA area. It depends on the person you talk to. Some guys just don't know, some don't care. I wont mention any names but even the big guys do it. The best thing to do is research and ask. The members here will be more then happy to help you. Feel free to e-mail me anytime you need help. if I can 't help you I will know somebody who can. I don't trust a single person when it comes to my reef. I read, I ask and I buy. |

Thanks! But even on here I've read conflicting things and its hard sometimes to tell when someone is coming from a place of fact or experience and from second hand knowledge. In this particular case, I lost a flame angel within two days of it being introduced to an established and what I thought was peaceful tank, to a green brittlestar. Most will probably say that I should have known better or maybe even, the flame was already on his way out. I'm not sure, but when I did more research (I initially did do research, but only read a couple threeads here and there) on the star (even though my LFS swears up and down that they are reef safe) I find an article by Dr. Shimek stating that there's no way on earth that they are safe in a reef environment......grrrrrrrI'll chalk it up to experience, but boy does it hurt when the fish you lose is the one you've always wanted! I originally started reefs 7 years ago and gave up....Even then I didn't get a flame angel. |

Reefdope, My LFS also said I could keep green brittles in a reef...
Came back a week later and their brittles had finished off 5 percs. Might sound cruel, but I just started to laugh inside the store... They state that they've been in the hobby for 20 somethi'n years, and they dont know that brittles eat livestock. ![]() |

Okay, had to rip apart the tank to get the brittle out! He's a sump dweller for now. The tank was getting pretty purple, darn! Oh well its get there again....I guess I'll be taking advise from you guys before I do anything in the future. Man, if it wasn't for this site, I may be in the quitting mood again.
