Green Star Polyp problem?

I have a friend that has some green star polyps and they are not coming out. This happen after he got a diatom algae bloom. There are small clumps of algae on the star polyps. Any ideas on how to get the polyps to open again?

I told him maybe try using a very soft toothbrush and try and get all the algae off that he can and move the polyps up higher in the tank with lots of current.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Jason
