Post Do you think

this banggai cardinal is carrying eggs? Saturday the 2 cardinals went behind the rocks for hours and I could see them doing this little dance. By evening the one I think is a female came out but everytime the other one came out she chased him back behind the rocks. These fish have always stayed out in the open. Now most of the time they hide behind the rocks. I assumed that the man is carrying eggs as I can see his jaw swollen more than normal and he acts like he can't close his mouth all the way. The only thing I am not sure about is I read that once a male takes the eggs he doesn't eat again until after releases the babies. But on Sunday I was feeding Baby Brine shrimp and he ate a little. At first he acted like he couldn't eat and just turned away from the food. But then he did eat a little. But he didn't eat like normal though. Do you think he is carrying eggs? Up until now I wasn't even sure if I had a pair or not. But I did think I did because they get along so well.

Rhonda,

The male will not eat if it is carrying the eggs - unless he releases them and then eats but would not pick them up again. IMO, it is pretty easy to tell if it is carrying. There's no mistaking. Here's some pics of a pregnant male:

which resulted in this:

I happen to have three males in my tank along with a female and she breeds with them all (which is not typical at all since most adult males will attack each other on sight). I usually have at least one male pregnant at all times - matter of fact, the current one has been carrying for three days now.

Best of luck to ya!

Ouch! Didn't realize that the pics were that large! I thought I had reduced them before - sorry about that!

Look! Babies!!! What's the purpose of the mini-helmet with the twigs sticking out of it in the third picture?

Looks like a fake sea urchin. The bangaiis love to hide in between the spines of sea urchins. I saw them doing this at the national aquarium in baltimore, really neat. Cant wait to setup a tank for a pair.

Todd,

Chromis hit it on the head - the babies will hide within the fake urchins. This was my first attempt at a fake urchin - close to 2 1/2 years ago. I've gotten much better at it now.
