New tank.....and anthias ?

Ok here is the deal. With the new tank....I've decided to do as follows......The tank has been running for a week now. It has new sand with some sand from my existing tank to seed the sand bed. The tank also has about 5gallons of water from the old tank as well. I was very careful as to keeping out the aptasia. I have also added right around 12-13lbs of brand new live rock. I took one of the rocks from my existing tank and snatched up as many b-worms, pods and mini stars as i could. i also found a couple small chunks of rock from my old tank that were aptasia free so i added them to my new tank. i will be keeping a very close eye on these rocks for the weeks to come and if i so much as think there is one in the tank im yanking them. I'm going to add about another 10-15lbs of rock in there next week and more sand from the old tank as well and some more water from the tank to ensure there is a good amount of nutrients in my new tank like there is in my old tank. I'm going to continue to dose calcium and try and get the coraline algae to grow as well. There is one rock which i am going to try and blast it free of aptasia and add it to my tank in the weeks to come because its a really nice archway peice that i'd like to have and plus its got all the little extra added pods, worms, stars, algae, etc on it so im going to try and salvage it. The rest of the rock im going to attempt to sell .....i'm sure you're thinking well who'd want that if i wouldn't......if anyone is interested in raising those berghia nudibranchs i've got one heck of a food source. I wouldnt ask much for the rock either. So if there are any takers let me know ASAP!! And after the tank is drained...i'll take the sand and add as much as i can to the already existing tank. While the "dust is settling" my brother is going to take care of my clowns and damsel and starfish......and my eel, TRE, will be waiting in my 20g full of the old rock so he'll have time to stay hidden and relax while the tank is all settling in. but there shouldnt be much sand to remove because i've been taking about 2-4 cups daily since i've been home on the weekends these past 2 weeks. But of course i'll check and double check the ammonia and nitrates before putting in the kids. I also found a excellent pet store w/ an excellent selection in fish and coral. They had a sale this weekend on trumpet corals, brains, leathers and xenia.......it pained me to walk out empty handed. You have no idea. but i knew it was the right thing to do. and the weekend of april the 20th i'll be making a trip to both sailfin and to ipsf. ipsf to get a coral or two as well as a detrivore kit. sailfin.....who knows. im pretty excited. Its all finally coming together. And with my lighting situation i'm not afraid to try some of the higher lighting corals but i wont until i've had experience w/ softies. My lighting situation is now vho's w/ pc actinics. and since the tank is fairly shallow and will have a fairly deep sandbed and will be on rock.....it'd get its share of lighting. its all starting to come together. its been a long time coming. and i'll make sure to take pix w/ my brothers digicam and post them........especially of tre i know some of you are anxious to see him. he's getting big. let me know of what your concerns are and we'll see if we can find a better solution in case my methods arent what you (the majority) would do.
Jon
p.s. what can you tell me about anthias'....more particular the "sunburst" is what the lfs called it. thanks.

Good luck on they project, it's fun to see it all come together. As far as anthias, the "sunburst" anthias also called the fathead anthias is the shyest of all the anthias. It is also very hard to get to take food and IMO is the hardest anthias to keep. I have not tried them for myself due to the shy nature and my system being a 180 for fear of loosing the fish in all that space. They do not come out and swim around like the squamipinnis{spelling} anthias or the square spot. I have heard and read that only very experienced fish keepers should take the sunburst anthias on as a fish to keep. HTH..

Shog I'm in a verrry small town called Mazon. The LFS that i frequent are Hobbyland in Joliet on Larkin Ave. Its a little place but I've been extremely happy with their products as far as stock, lr, SERVICE and the fact the guy who runs it knows his stuff. He takes care of me now seeing as I bought my tank, stand, lights, sand, salt, from him in one day alone so I left him a nice little bonus so he makes sure to sit around and b.s. with me even though he has people waiting to buy stuff. He knows how to keep his sw. people happy. The LFS which has EXCELLENT SELECTION AND STOCK in my opinion is PetLand in Naperville. I dont know how much you know about naperville but its a pretty richie rich town so I assume that SW tanks are very common so they keep an excellent selection of sps, lps, clams, fish, inverts, and everything between. Their lr. has a little bit to be desired from as of last week....it was just basicly bare....no coraline on it. But they had every type known to man so ....again great selection. They had the sunburst there (a pair actually) and they were very active and looked to be happy. If they are still there this week I'll observe again and make sure they were the sunburts' i'm fairly sure they were. Today I hit Marine Aquatics in Bloomington....their selection of fish was...good and their corals were very few....just mushrooms. But they had a good invert. selection. I got 7 reef hermits (2 red 5 blue) and I also got a sally light foot crab. I'll keep you all posted on how the tank is coming along as it changes.
Jon
p.s. shog what places do you frequent?

Hi Jon
I have 4 Sunburst Anthias in my 220g and I love them, however I will agree for the most part with what Sue has stated, they are very hard to keep as the feeding is more laborous, which can cause other excessive nutrient problems if you are not careful. I ordered 6 of them from FFexpress and they where only able to send 5 and of those 5 one of them has died (I suspect from underfeeding) I was dealing with 2 contradicting elements at the same time

Feeding my anthias enough

Keeping out excessive nutrients (which was encouraging algae bloom)

I was able to decrease the total amount of food but increase the times I fed per day, This can be MUCH more laborous but it appears that I am tackling both problems here, as my sunburst appear healthy and my algae blooms are diminishing somewhat. The sunburst anthias are definately a VERY colourful fish but If I was to do it all over again I might have chosen a different anthias. HTH
