I know it's no big thing to you old hands, but it's a big deal for me. I just saw my first confirmed life on my live rock, some kind of feather duster I think. I noticed it because it whipped its tentacles in while I was watching. It's about the size of two pinheads and its name is Howard.

Right on! Just wait, you'll be getting surprised constantly from here on out. Its not unusual to see new critters years down the road.

I think you're going to run out of feather-duster names pretty soon. I've gotten past the 'ooo...there's another one'. I'm at the 'ooo...is that one different from the rest?'.

A month ago I discovered 4 tiny little stars that react like feather dusters, so that's probably what they are, just a different variety. Anyway, I've had this rock for over a year and I didn't think anything larger than microscopic was growing on it. I've also found worms and snail like thingies that I didn't knowingly put into the tank. Finding new life is always fun.

Hi All,
Yes, if we are ever forced to “give up” live rock, this is one of the neat aspects of “real” rock that will be missed. I have had live rock that had been in my systems for years and observed a “new” life pop out of nowhere. Listen to scubadude on this one. You will be AMAZED when you see all the "critters" at night. Most people just use flashlighs but using a small blue "moonlight" is becoming common. Get your flashlight and note pad out tonight and we'll surely see you posting for ID's tomorrow.

Hi All,
This is the reason why I decided to switch from FW to SW. I spent everynight in front of my 30gl and 75gl refugium with a magnifying glass marveling at the critters coming out of my live rock. I even caught my wife doing the same at one time, this she never did with my FW set-up. There is still some hope of converting her. I am starting early with my 11 month old baby and she have her own 75gl FW setup right beside her crib. We'll eventually convert that to a reef tank when she begins to appreciate the hobby. |
