Leather placement with MH lights.
I aquired a leather on Sunday and have seemed to have gotten it acclimitized to my lights. Its looking good and all is well. I just need to figure out where to place it.
My optimal spot on my rockwork would put it about 4" from the waterline, which is 7 3/4" away from the MH bulb. I think its too close, but I will try it and see how the leather reacts. Those of you out there with leathers in your tank, where have you found optimal placement? I searched the board and found alot regarding circulation, but nothing much when it comes to how close people have put them to their lights. I don't want to burn it. |

Since you just got it sunday it is alittle early to be placeing it so close to halides unless it was under halides before.
There are a lot of different leathers from fingers, toadstools, devils and alot others so a litte better description would also help. Leathers in general like a lot of light and where you want to place should be fine in time. But it takes more than a couple of days to aclimate from lower light to halides. You should give it at least a week at the bottom of the tank and then slowly move it up the tank over a extra week or so till you get it up that high. Since you all ready moved keep a very close eye on it and should it start looking bad move down to the bottom and start over on aclimating to your lights. |

Thanks for the advice. I should have been more specific, it is a finger leather that came from a tank running 175w halide lamps. The MH I am putting it under is 250w. It was very high up in the tank I bought it from, so it has already had pretty intense lighting. It didn't seem to require much as far as acclimitization. I placed it at first in a shadow under a ledge and it didn't really open until I moved it out into the direct light.
I don't plan on moving it up to the place I want it all at once, it will take a while to get it that high. I was just interested in other people's knowledge and experience since I don't want to spend the effort moving it up only to find out it was the wrong thing to do. It sounds like it will work, the spot will have good but not direct current and be pretty bright. I just avoid putting my hands on the tank, so if I decide to move anything I like to make sure its going to be the last time I move it. ![]() |
