Post Bioball

I really haven't kept up on whats wrong with bioball, but I though I should finally ask why ppl don't use it. I currently have it in my bakpak skimmer, if I do take it out what should I replace it with? I was thinking of installing a light it it and making a mini refugium? So what should I do?

just to make sure bioball is the blue stringy stuff isn't it? and if not then I'm really going to be embarresed

Mikeman,

I don't have the BakPak, but is it BioBalls?? or Biobale insert inside the skimmer??

I know there is a biobale in the first line of CPR BakPaks.

Bioballs help turn ammonia, to nitrate, but then also to nitrate and tend to keep them high. It will work for fish only in my opinion. My old 80 gallon acrylic was fish only, and it had a bioball system/ sump.

Regards,
Ilham

same thing lots of people are using a large deep sand bed to do much of their biological filtration because to produses little to no nitrates. but you do become limited to the amount of fish you can put in the tank most people who are doing this have reef tanks that are realy into keeping coral and inverst and having a few fish

I think the Biobale in your skimmer has two functions. The first is to provide a home for the bacteria to covert NH3->NO2->NO3. The second is a debubbler. I think if you remove the entire bale from the skimmer, you may find more bubbles in your main tank. You'll probably have to strike a balance between bubbles and a nitrate factory.

Good luck.

When I removed mine I actually had less bubbles in the tank.

A "biologocal" filter such as bioballs, or biobale for that matter can only produce as much nitrate as introduced into the system as amonia or nitrite. Thus if you do not overcrowd and overfeed, you will not have a so-called nitrate factory. You will not, however have the anaerobic conditions necessary for nitrification, whereby nitrates are converted into nitrogen gas.
