Reef Tank Comes Down Today

I've given up the battle against hair algae and now red slime again. I'm adopting out my corals, clam and fish today and taking the tank down.

I'm going to store my equipment, and I'll start up again when I get the bug again in a year or so.

In the meantime, I'm going to continue learning as much as I can, so I do a better job next time.

I had a severe HA problem myself. I don't now if you use a Co2 driven reactor or not , but that turned out to be my problem (to much Co2 getting in the tank). I turned the reactor off and all my agae died off. Hope thing work out for you.

My tank had a 2" HA bloom all over, now its all gone thanks to kick ass skimming, natural seawater and Blue legged hermits...

the red slime is best controlled by water flow, and the hair by blennies and yellow tangs. i hear that the kole or yellow eyed tang will eat the red slime too but am having a problem finding one. don't give up too soon.

I had both a Blennie and a Yellow Tang in the tank, both of who spent most of their day staring at the algae.

I haven't seen the feathery ends of Bryopsis forming on any of the algae strands, and some of them are 3" long.

My LFS owner is adopting my livestock. He's going to try to re-cure the LR in a dark tank and will re-use the DSB, so all of the living creatures will have new homes.

I don't have a calcium reactor, and I've been skimming all along with a Remora Pro and a Mag 5 pump.

It's been fun, i've learned a lot, and next time I'll make fewer mistakes.

Reinhold,

I hope that during your tank "hiatus", that you still continue to post at Reefland once in a while.

If not, your sense of humor will be MISSED !

Thanks. I'll continue to lurk in the background and comment when the absurd needs to be pointed out....take warning FishKid and organicreefer....just kidding!

I hope to learn enough over the hiatus to be able to put up a successful reef again. Of course, I was successful for two years until the sudden and unexplained crash. I guess that's what makes reefing such a challenge and so much fun.

I have a little bit of the red algae, and bought a queen conch that seems to love the red algae.

Fishkid:

I'm planning on raising Emperor Angels and Naso Tangs in my 55 until I get back to reefing.
