Think I caught it from Fish Kid

I had gotten some big nice turbo snails from a guy who is breaking down his system, but was delayed in putting them into my new tank, so I left them in the bucket for 3 days. Then I thought I'd better go ahead and get them into a tank anyway, so I put them into the 40 gal. For 3 more days I was in a state of denyal about their demise, but finally I decided they were really dead and took them out. I have a hermit crab in the other tank that is badly in need of a new shell and one of these turbo shells would fit the bill. But these snails stunk so much, I wasn't about to just drop them into the the tank.

So I got a pan and started boiling some water and dropped these 4 dead stinky snails in. OMG! Within 2 minutes the whole house stunk like a rotten pier.
So I opened all the doors and windows and sprayed air freshener--which didn't help.

I had an appointment, so I went to take a bath (refuge in the only room that didn't stink) and while I was in the tub, I noticed the bathroom mirrors needed cleaning, so when I got out I grabbed what I thought was Windex and sprayed all these huge mirrors. Only I sprayed them with Tub n Tile cleaner! So for the next 15 minutes I wiped frantically to get the streaks out, then I smelled something that was even more horrible than the rotten pier. The damn pier was on fire!!! I raced to the kitchen to find the pan boiled dry and snail shells burnt to the bottom of the pan. The smell was HORENDOUS !!

One of the little neighbor girls came to the door with her friend to show him our fish tanks. They said EEEWWW, and immediately decided they needed to be some place else.

And that was only in the first hour. I still have the rest of the day.

And I thought I was the only one. I did that exact same thing for the exact same reason. It must be the turbo snails.

When it rains it pours bughead.

That has to be one of my top 10 worst smells in the universe.... dead/decaying saltwater snails. To think about that stuff on fire... man that is just WRONG! I would have gotten a hotel room.

Just be glad they were snails and not leather corals. We actually had customers leave our store the other day due to the smell of a dead leather coral. Never handle the dead ones with your hand, the smell wont go away for days.

Man that is funny. I know half the smell anyway but not the cooking smell. That is one I dont want to smell. I did have to smell dead rotting rat in my car for a week in the summer in arizona when one crawled into the frame of the car and had to take the car in to have them cut holes in the door frame work to pick out the deacing corpse and that is pretty bad smell.

EEEEWWWW!!!!
Dead anything is nasty, especially in the heat. My ex was a cattle dealer and on occasion we'd take a trip to Denver Rendering--not one of my favorite places, by a long shot. The smell was overwhelming, yet the workers would be sitting on a dead cow carcass eating their lunch!
Seems more like a very effective dieting method, to me.

That is one bad story. The worst smell I remember was a long timea go riding in a motor home going from Houston to Denver. It was spring and we had the windows open and I remember waking up and saying "What is that horrible smell". The answer was "We're just going through Amarillo". I will never forget that. The stock yards story reminded me and now I need to go get a breath of fresh air.
