Leather corals
Even though they had some great corals down there I passed on them, tomorrow I'm going to my local lfs and I'm really looking forward to getting a leather coral, my question is what flow do they like? should I feed them? thanks

Moderate flow. If the flow is too high the polyps will not come out. Some leathers can move to a spot they like.
I've never fed my finger leather and it has grown from a 2" frag to a 8" beauty in 10 months. A little direct feeding wouldn't hurt, though.

depends on what kind of leather, some, like sarcophytons, like a brisk current, and s elegans requires a strong current.
i have a beautiful toadstool with a 9"round cap that loves strong intermitent current, though it did do ok in my old system with less flow. |

umbrella= toadstool right?mine is exactly like the one in mridley's tank, ecxept mine is prettier
j/k looks like his polyps just werent perfectly expanded at the time of picthey can grow to near the surface in nature, and can exp. strong tidal currents give it good flow /light,and it will grow fast |

oops i forgot ,sometimes they close/shrivel up to get rid of sediments /algea.they usually stay closed a day or so and then open seemingly bigger and more beautiful than ever(mine is closed up today as a matter of fact,a rarity for mine ,who 's polyps stay extended practically 24/7).
youres is probly just closed because of the change right now ive read that staying closed for up to four or five days shouldnt be a concern, but mine has never stayed closed more than two.hth ![]() |

sorry for the next question but what do the polyps look like? The coral itself is tannish, and its now almost sprouting out short brown tubes, is this its polyps?

yeah, it looks like the coral on the left side, in the middle,in the pic it is kinda of cut off. Is that what your talking about?
I also want to add that only about half of the corol has polyps opened on it? Hopefully the whole coral will open up! |
