How much iodine must you dose?
It says on the bottle do dose 3Ml every 2 days? Is this seems a little much for me? Although I think my leather might have an infection so I need to have a good amount, should I use the recomended dose?

It depends what type of iodine you are talking about. I use the lugols solution which is highly concentrated. For my 125 I use 5 drops every two weeks.(that is what the directions state) 1DROP PER 25 GAL EVERY 2 WEEKS. I would definately follow the directions exactly. JMO

I only use Iodine if I frag or suspect ill health, or havent done a w/c in a while, Dr. Shimek has suggested that some reefers are adding too much iodine causing imbalances like shrimp molting too often. Sue Truett does an Iodine dip to all introductions that she puts into her tank and her tank is stunning! Sue (if you read this) do you also add Iodine to your tank? Doing dips to suspected problems in an isolated environment (so it doesnt offset anything in the main tank) to me makes the most sense! If you use good salt then it should have adequate additives in it already when you do your w/c's shouldnt it? Iodine anyway? I put iodine in my tank once (just a few drops of lugols) and the star polyps closed up for a day or two.

its my new umbrella leather, it has a kind of blister like thing on it that I think may be an infection and I'm trying to add iodine to help it recover, hopefully.

at 6:02 I turned my skimmer off and added some iodine and dried phytoplankton, at 7:00 is wasn't open, then at 9:30 when I turned my skimmer back on I noticed that the coral was completely open, and even a couple of polyps on the infected area are open,
Is this the wonderful world of corals? ![]() |

Mikeman- glad to hear your leather is on it's way to recovery. When you're talking about dosing a tank with something, there really is no concrete answer because it varies from tank to tank. There are too many variables for any of us to know exactly what your tank's needs are. The more corals you have that would use up the iodine, the more you would need to dose. Just start off by following the instructions and you could get a test kit later on to see how quickly the iodine gets consumed by the corals in your tank. Personally I don't test for iodine, and I don't test for a lot of things. I just watch everything very closely and I will only test when it looks like there is a problem. I use lugol's iodine and I use it sparingly... just a drop or two a week. Overdosing iodine can promote micro algea growth so you want to be careful. Dosing iodine is not to be overlooked though, as you are quickly finding out with your leather. Just use the recommended amount and chances are your corals will be satisfied with that.

If the infected areas look really bad, you can use a turkey baster to blow off the bad tissues and place the leather in an area of moderate current. When doing so still doesn't stop the infection (in two days), I usually amputate the infected areas. When the leather is strong, it will regrow very quickly. If it is going downhill anyways, you wouldn't hurt it anymore than it is right now. Better sooner than later in treating it. Or else the entire leather will melt away.
