Aquacontroller II question

I am going out of town in two weeks and would like to hook my aquacontroller 2 up to my external modem to send a page when the temp get too high or PH goes out of wack. I have the modem now but need to know how to hook it up. I see there is a serial port that you can buy the cable for about $20. I thought this was to hook it to a computer or is it for both. Confused guys, can someone clear this up. Cant find the neptune website either.
