Does Cigarette Smoke Affect Reef Tank?
I am a heavy smoker and wonder if the smoke could be affecting my reef? Any ideas on this?

Carol,
This has been debated before and the general concesus is that smoking, and especially sticking you hand in the tank without washing them after smoking can indeed transer harful chemicals to the tank. now I don't know how bad it can be for the inhabitants, but it can't be good. -Perry |

I sure is bad for your aquariums. my skimmer stops working every time I light up, because it is injecting air with smoke into the reaction chamber as well as the water in the entire tank. I wont be suprised if my fish are addicted. J/k

I don't have any evidence, but I'd have to say it's bad for the tank. Ya know, I've been in a lfs where the owner smoked a lot and I actually saw him doing water changes on his tanks while smoking. Needless to say I never bought anything from there again.

i dont smoke anymore, but i live with someone who does..im sure it does affect the tank, but im not sure how /how much...everyhting seems pretty good,id hate to think i might be handicapping myself.
my skimmer does not stop working if someone is smoking in the room, but since this is a way that air is being mixed with the water ive been keeping the air tube that supplies my venturi right on the floor as low as possible, and ive been thinking of attaching an air filter of some kind to it. ive also been considering an air filter for the room as well. but these things arent really at the top of the list ,as i said my tank seems to be doing just fine-and all my tanks have always done fine. but then again sometimes the thought nags at me..... |

organic.. just poke a little hole through the wall and put a little filter or sponge just to stop debree from entering.. being that the other side of the wall is the outside! that way you get fresh air even though there smoking.
