I will be setting up a 90g reef tank and am planning a DSB of 4-5”. I will buy 50 lbs of LS (and rock and other things) from someone with an established tank. His LS is CaribSea Aragonite. My question is what to add to it since 50 lb will not be enough for me. I have three 50lb bags of Southdown and one 40lb bag of CaribSea Aragonite (1-4mm particle size). I could add either of these or a combination of both.
Your comments will be appreciated. |

You could add them all together, the size of the sand is probably very similar; aethetics are all that matter at this point. If they look different than one another you would want to mix them well to get a uniform look. Unless you don't care, or it looks fine just dumped together.

Hi Virginia Reef!
Add all of them! The mixed particle size will be great for your DSB. I get the impression that you are worried about adding 50lbs of LS though? That will be more than enough to seed your dry sand making it all live over a period of time. Better yet, see if you can get a few cups of sand from some other local reefers tank to add LS diversity.
Best of luck, Scott Z. |

Thanks for your input. It always helps to ask what works for others before you plunge in.
