Post Do I need a skimmer?

I set up a 55 gallon tank with EcoSystem sump. Tomorrow I am receiving 45# of Marshall Island Live Rock from Jeff's Exotic Fish. I am not sure if it is precured at Jeff's, but I would like to add the rock directly to my tank to cure and cycle the water. Will I need a cheap protein skimmer (seaclone) to lightly skim the water??

If you are using the ecosystem you don't need a skimmer.

I MEAN DO I NEED A PROTEIN SKIMMER TO HELP WHILE THE LIVE ROCK IS CURING? OTHERWISE, HOW WILL THIS HIGH LEVEL OF NUTRIENTS LEAVE THE WATER??

It is my opinion that you need a skimmer to start any system, ecosystem or not. As for curing rock it is a definite must along with lots of water changes and testings.

Kid, its not nice to yell (cap letters) you don't need a cheap skimmer you need a GOOD skimmer.....

IMO, you can get by curing rock without a skimmer but you will probaly have better luck using a good skimmer. The rock you get from Jeff will not be cured...

I would have to agree with personifer.
I have cured live rock without a skimmer in a FOWLR system with no probablems and add a skimmer a 2 mounths latter with no problem. If youre using a ecosystem I really dont see a need for a skimmer just do some water changes.

You will lose a little more life by not using a skimmer. Personally I wouldn't go out and buy a skimmer just to cure the rock. Just keep an eye on your ammonia and keep it down with water changes.

I can't afford another $200 skimmer. I'm broke after I bought MH and LR. Would it be fine if I didn't use a protein skimmer at all, but did water changes? I don't mind if it takes longer before the cycle is over. The tank has already been running for 3 and a half weeks w/ a small amount of LR and sand. It is already going through the cycle.

You'll only need the skimmer while curing and initial setup... maybe you should make a skimmer.

I have used this one http://www2.hawaii.edu/~delbeek/ff.html before as well as I have built it for a couple of people. It works quite well, and can be built for less than $40.00.
