I am getting my rock flown in wednesday and am wondering how I should aquascape. I would appreciate any pictures of peoples tanks after aquascaping. Preferably not with a whole bunch of corals and fish but whatever ya got. I'm gettin 90 lbs for my 55 if it helps.

WOW Scubadude, those pictures look like a bunch of piles of...ummm, sausages. Anyway, just to throw in my two cents. I have rearranged the rock in my tanks at least a couple dozen times and was never all that happy with it. Every time I went to add a new coral or something I had to find a spot, then the whole structure would come tumbling down, what a pain in the arse. Finally about 3 weeks ago after contemplating the best possible way to integrate 3 new corals in to the rock structure I came up with an absolutely brilliant idea. I just pushed the whole darn thing over. I could not have made this thing look better if I had tried. I was amazed at what I had created out of utter disgust. We have caves, and tunnels it looks as impressive from the back and sides as it does from the front. The only negative point about the new layout is that one of the larger pieces is only about 1/2" away from the front glass making it a pain to clean that one spot.
As soon as my new camera arrives I will take some pictures. ------------------ Kyle Holladay My Fish Site |

You can't tell a whole lot from the picture, but I really like the big cave in the middle. ------------------ Visit my reef tank at: http://hometown.aol.com/akaslyguy/index.html [This message has been edited by AkaSlyGuy (edited 05-29-2001).] |

I don't have these pic on my web site yet but here you go. We just aquascaped my new 180 this past week-end as it came out so well. Let me correct myself, my wife did it and it took her 5 1/2 hrs and 200lbs LR. Lots of caves and tunnels with light coming through the top.

No pics, unfortunately, but I just try to think of natural reef structures: ridges, caves, points, outcroppings, etc.
My structure is pretty solid and won't fall, I made sure it wouldn't by the way I placed my rock. DOn't perch it precariously, but make sure its a rock you would use to stand on in a stream. HTH ------------------ JCS "Too much of everything is just enough." Hunter/Weir |

thanks guys, guess I'll have to mess around with it for a while after I get it. Unfortunatley, PA is out of cured rock till next week. Oh well, whats another week. Lets see when did I get this tank? Oh yeah, Christmas And reefing is supposed to be about patience, the thing I dont have and cant buy Oh well, jason seems like a nice guy.

i dont have any pics of my tank for you right now,but i can offer my 2 cents on this subject.dont build a wall of rocks with caves like you see sooo often think assymetrical and in odd numbers and youre tank will be more natural looking.

Steve that is a Gemini pump, I am going to move it to the back left corner. I really like it as it put out 960gph and have it on a timer. It comes on for 30 minutes and then off for 2 hrs and then back on for 30 minutes, after 10PM doesn't come back on till 9AM.

Steve, I do not know when the pump goes on as it is very quite. I wish I could get another one but they are always out of stock. It took 5 weeks to get this one as it was back ordered

I dont have any pics to put up but i still think i might have some useful guidelines.
1. the aquarium layout should be ASYMETRICAL, from front to back, top to bottom, and left to right. 2. place the rocks together in the opposite of a jigsaw puzzle. Use up as much space w/ as little rock. 3. Utilize the negative (empty) space just as much as the positive (rock) space. play them off each other so as to create dynamic areas of contrast. 4. should you aim for a Valley or mountain arrangement, make it so the the trough or the crest of the arrangement is aligned around the 3/5 area of your tank (4' tank=29"from one side). 5. sometimes more is less. |

Well it turns out PA does have some rock. It is basket ball size pieces. Do you think I should get some? Keep in mind that it is only a 55 gallon tank.

Will a basketball fit into your tank? I like different sized pieces, personally. But I remember a display tank we had that had one 50# piece in it (it was a whole box) and people were wanting to buy it from us daily, but when it was in our tanks for sale, we couldn't get anybody to touch it. You could always break the rock if it doesn't fit.

I remember some time back there was a posting that had some links to Japanese tanks with some really nice aquascaping.
I am sure a search of the archives would find it. Well worth a look. p.s. Wait for the good rock. A week in Reefing is nothing. Also some people have had success in drilling holes and using cable ties to link rocks into awesome designs. Or the udnerwater putty works too. Take your time and send some pics.
