Yellow Fiji Coral Question
Hi All,
I have got a Yellow Fiji Coral. I am pretty sure it is a Yellow Leather (sacrophyton) I have had it in my tank for almost a year now and it has really not grown at all. It still does open up for me and seems OK. It is in an area of high flow and near the top of the tank. But main question: I occassionally find these clumps of stuff, in ball shapes, laying in the center of the coral and it is all closed up. The stuff almost looks like a ball of fish poop. When I try to blow it off the balls of stuff are attached to string like things from the coral and don't fully blow off. They just stay suspended over the coral. But they leave behind a bright yellow spot from where the stuff was laying on the coral? Any thoughts about this? Thanks, CaptK |

all sarcophytons periodically shed this waxy film -to rid themselves of detritus/ debris and algea.
sarcophyton elegans needs very strong light and strong water movement-sounds like you got it placed correctly. |

What kind of light is yours under? Mine sheds regularly and has grown considerably in the month or two that I've had it. If yours isn't growing I would suspect perhapes you don't have enough light, or something else is going on.
Mine cycles about a week on, week off. It is open and active for a week, then waxes over and sheds which takes almost another week. After that it is noticably cleaner, healed, and has grown almost a full inch in every direction. It is about eight inches tall and four to six wide now. I am not saying yours should be exactly like mine, but after a year I would expect noticable growth. Mine is in a flow area where none of the sloughing stays on the coral. I would think if it is placed right you wouldn't be getting any that is sticking to the coral. |

I have the coral placed under 3 75W VHO's on an icecap ballast in my 29G tank. The coral is also about 12" away from a MaxiJet 1200. The main flow of the powerhead goes right over the top of the coral, not directly into it.
And about once or twice a week I feed the tank with Golden Pearls and or Kents Phytoplex. I am not sure though if this coral appreciates these foods. Thanks, CaptK |
