Not much information in your profile. As saltjunkie said, tell us more about your set up - filtration, lights, etc. Then we will be able to help you more. If you are running a wet/dry filter, I would suggest you take the media (bio-balls, bio-cubes, bio-bale, etc) and rinse them in the same water you take out for your next water change. You need to use the same water from your tank so you don't kill the bacteria on the media. The media will trap alot of particulate waste that gets converted into nitrates.

red algae
If it is Red SLime Algae (brutal stuff) I totally recommend some
stuff called RED SLIME REMOVER....It is a little vial type of bottle with an orangish powder in it....I have used it according to instructions and it works like a charm....The only thing is your skimmer will go crazy probably for a week...you may have to shut it off for a few days.... THE STUFF WORKS and it says right on it THE RESULTS WILL AMAZE YOU and they did amaze me! Your tank, for some reason, is not balanced....is it a newer tank? Tim |

Go to your lfs and get these things called E.M. Tablets.......toss two in and do a 4 or 5g water change about 3 days later it'll start deecaying away. It'll cost ya a few bucks.
Good Luck Jon |

I have used the product called red slime it is good stuff and will have it knocked out in a cpl daz but the key is to find out why ya have it. IME it is caused from 3 things. Lack of circulation, excess netrients(overfeeding) or bad bulbs (that have switched spectrum) I had red slime in the Wifes 20 I ised the red slime product and also upgraded lights to a Powerquad and poof it was gone in a few daz. Good luck in your search.
Jeff

If this is really cyanobacteria (aka red slime algae), I would find the cause for it before I start pouring any chemicals to fight it back. Chemicals might kill it, but if the fuel for cyano is there, it will grow back.
Find the cause, then fight it. Siphoning out the red slime will help a lot for a start. If you just kill it with chemicals, the decaying cyano will add more nutrients to the tank, and the circle starts again (or goes on) As said above, more tank details will help a lot to find the cause. Joaco |

I agree but like I said I changed lights at the same time so there was my problem.

Jeff,
that's a good point to consider if anything else is in check (nutrient level, etc). Red phycoerythrin (the pigment that gives the red color to the 'red slime') has an optimized absorption level at 555-564 nm (nanometer) wavelength. Like you said, old bulbs tend to shift spectrum, and there you go! Joaco |

red algea
More info on my tank..I have a 55 gal reef and I think everything with any fish and corals are all in check..I have a good air circulation going and a skimmer going....There is no filter, the guy at my fish store told me I have enough of rock to keep the water filtered..I did change my bulbs..They were going out..They are haligin lighting and it is aprox 140 watts..It is a 55 gal.......Do you think I need to hook the filter back? It is just a back over hang filter...The tank has been hooked up for 2yrs..Please anyone get back to me I hope everything is quiet clear...
