Jeff's Exotic Fish - Live Rock

Check out this thread and be very careful if buying live rock from them. I tried a couple times to contact them about this and received no response at all.

Don't bother buying boxes of rock, at best its a gamble since you can't see what your getting first, unless your into getting base rock instead of live rock. Oh in case your wondering, since it takes me about 2 hours each way to get there I'm not going to bother showing up at his door step. It would cost me more to do that than to just let it go....

I would not buy LR sight unseen. You say you live in LA? There's no way your 2 hours away from his store. If your not happy with what you bought you should have just taken it back to him and hand picked your rock. You don't say what kind you bought, is it Vanisi?

No, I got some great Figi the last time from an LFS, so I thought I'd try to give that a shot. I usually have Marshall and Tonga prior. I guess I'll just never buy a box of rock without seeing what's in it first and having to pay double because of that......

Golfish,

By the way, I'm in West LA, so by the time I traverse to the 10 and down the 405 on a normal day, it does take about 2 hours. But that is cause I keep hitting all the rush hour and airport traffic. I don't know of any other way, but the last three times I've done it have been almost exactly the same. I've even tried leaving an hour or so earlier and no luck....Have a look at the 405 after 2pm on any given weekday and you'll see my point.

I've gotten a box of Vanisi from Jeff's last year, it was great rock--had orange, green, and pinkish/peachy coralline. The Vanisi isn't known for their "purple coralline" like the Fiji. Overall I liked the rock. However, there were obvious dieoffs. Large sticky snails were found dead in the boxes and that gave one bad smell.

Have you tried FFexpress.com? I just got a box, and it was nice with an assortment of sizes. This would be the 4th or 5th box I've ordered with them. Always happy each time.

I would also advise to give Jeff's a call. They seem to be nice people. I'm sorry your box didn't satisfy what you were looking for.

Sorry this is another off-topic, but sometimes I just want to start laughing because here I am with a whole bunch of you talking about "rocks" Maybe it's just me today, I just filled up my tank to just past the cracked part. So far no leaks Tomorrow I'll fill it all up. I'm not up to it tonight.

I've have lived in the LA area for 40 years.............don't tell me it takes 2 hours to drive to Jeff's because we both know that BS. Sure it does at 5pm on Monday, at 1pm on Saturday it takes 40 minutes.

Golfish -

Wow 40 years (been hit hard by the need to experience other cultures eh )...well, if you can do the trip at the times I mentioned in under an hour and a half, then you win the grand prize....a big jug of beer on me. I'm totally serious and not trying to pull you leg..That's how long its taken me. It takes me a half hour just to get to the 10! Well, you live near the 605 and its a totally different trip for you, much faster from what I've heard, but I've done it three or four times in the last 6 months and that's how long its taken me each time (roughly of course) And yes, on a Saturday its much faster, if you can get down there on a Saturday that would be great..I guess I must drive slow.

PS. Hope your tone is friendlier that it sounds, cause I'm not really in the business of wasting my time writing BS. And if that's how you feel about a difference of opion (yes opinion, cause unless you sit in the car while I drive, its your opinion) then I guess you just know it all and no one else is worth your time. I apologise if I've mistaken you tone, but I go to the airport from work all the time, and Jeff's is a bit farther, particularly in bumper to bumper, so I think I have some idea of how long it takes to get there.

Golfish and Elmo -

I appreciate your input, but the best way I can put this is that is was a principle issue. Yes I was just talking about rocks, but I also was talking about getting quality product for your money and not letting vendors get away with selling something below par. I guess I should have waited and posted results when the experience was over, but I jumped the gun. At this point, I just don't care, cause the flames I've received here and elsewhere make me wonder whether its ever worth mentioning to anyone else when you have a problem with a vendor. I'd rather people post them, so that we don't give our business to vendors who are just out to make money and don't ready care about those of us who are sinking a lot of money into this.

Reefdope,

I wasn't flaming at all I was just thinking it's ridiculous (me included ) talking about rocks (not like we always do.....).

I would also like the best quality rock I get.

Mikeman,

Not my job to continuously chase someone. Again, three seperate attempt at contact should be enough. Raise your own standards.

Hey reefdope,
If you are unhappy with you service, then do not do business with that particular establishment again. Dispute the charges, then move on.
If you feel that you have done everything in your means to contact Jeff, then do what you think is right for you.

I haven't had a bad experience with Jeff's but just do it!

I always got through when I called by phone but if you want me to call for you and explain the situation and post, let me know. It will take me only 5 minutes.

You shouldn't drive ms. daisy while taking a trip to buy live rock. She complains way too much.

And on that note - Jeff is a good dude, he will take care of it, just go there and tell him what happened and if you aren't a moron about it while you are there then every will work out.

Good Luck.

Just in defense of L.A. Traffic... I've lived here my whole life. Live in Manhattan Beach, work in Burbank. That's 4 times as far as where you are. I come home from the 5!!! to the 10 to 110 to 405 at 5pm. Takes 1:15 AT THE MOST bumper to bumper at rush hour. That's a 40 mile drive. There's no way in hell it takes as long to cross from West L.A. to Torrance. When it takes 1:40 to get to San Diego from L.A. (which is 125 miles).

Now as for the rock, have you contacted Jeff's about it? If you're paying alot for stuff you aren't happy with, you need to voice your opinion to them about it.

Bluewater - That's the reverse direction. Try doing it in the oposite direction at about 3pm on any given weekday like I mentioned and if you can do it in less time than I said from where I start to Jeff's then so be it, you win the jug of beer! Whoohoo

I've tried contacting them a number of times, they have chosen not to rectify the situation. I'm moving on and just not buying from him anymore.
