Question Clam newbie here...

Well I just received my new metal halides (2x250w 6.5k Iwasaki) and am about to retro them into my hood. I really want to start keeping clams...all kinds of them, Maximas, Derasas, croceas etc... Can any of you Veteran Clam keepers offer any wise words of wisdom on how to care for these guys. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!!

Then you can get his book, if you want more...its $39.95 most anywhere but I searched on the net and found it used (looked new to me) for like 18bux. Barry is selling them at www.clamsdirect.net Great book! I would start with a deresa, they are great starter clams

I agree, start with Daniel Knop's book as it is about the most altogether info out there on keeping tridacna clams. You need to make sure your water is good as far as calcium, clams are also very sensitive to pH swings and will not do good if the swing is too great from am to pm. I have also found they will only stay where they are happy. We all read and try to follow that maxima's {for example} like being in the rocks, while that is true mine are happiest in the sand bed. So you will need to see where your clam{when you get started} is best suited and don't try to make them be where they are not happy. These are cool creatures but have got to be cared for as they are sensitive too.

As all of the previous post stated, do some good reading and you light will be fine with Tridacna clams.

Most people do a really good job acclimating their new clams to water but sometimes get into a rush with the lighting acclimation.

Welcome to the world of clams
