problem algea
I have this dark green clumpy algea all over my sand. It does not grow anywhere else.
It is like a turf. Does anyone know what I Can do to get rid of it? The water parameters are fine. Calcium 380-420 Alkalinity: greater than 3.5 Nitrate: 0 obviously becuse of the algea, but it used to be less 10 I use RO/DI water. Hermit crabs and purple tang eat it but cannot keep up with it. What can I do? |

Again, I would suggest Emerald Crabs, also known as Mithrax crabs. Put two in there, and see what happens.
If they don't work at least they are not that expensive, and they will probably mate and provide more zooplankton in the form of larvae. -Elmo ![]() |

Guys,
I really need your help. It is spreading like wild fire. I will try the emerald crabs, but what if they do not work? I will post a picture on Monday, but If anyone can help, please. Do I take the whole tank apart and start over? |

Hey DM
![]() What type of clean up crew do you have? I take it this is in your 75gallon reef tank in your profile? Any chance your test kits could be wrong? Maybe take another sample into the LFS and get some test for stuff like silicates, phosphates, nitrates. Can you get a pic of the problem algae? Is it hair algae or byropsis? Can you pull some of it out by hand? Usually when people describe algae as "TURF" then its hair algae, I agree with elmo that the mithrax crabs are good but I think if its hair algae then a Lawnmower Blenny. I will try and get some pics of Hair Algae and byropsis so we can help you narrow down your treatment options.....There have been alot of people lately tossing around hair algae problems on the board Cmon ppl lets help DM here

There seems to be ALOT of confusion about wether people have hair algae or byropsis From my conclusions I have gathered here are pics of both! I would definately like to hear from others about this as it appears to be a big issue!
Heres a pic of some Byropsis And heres some Hair Algae Diadema sp. Urchins are a possibility too I think Heres more info on them http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish2/a...wb/default.asp

Thanks for the pictures, but my algae is neither of those. I will try to get the picture tomorrow.
My algae only stays attached to the sand. It looks like clumps of dark green stuff. I have blue leg and scarlet hermit crabs, The lawnmower blenny did not touch that stuff. |

Do you possibly have a refugium? It could be that the plant material you have in your sump went sexual.

Dive_master,
Are you able to get a pic of the algae? Are there more spreading in the tank or is it stabilizing? I still think Mithrax crabs may eat that. They do eat hair algae. -Elmo |
