Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone has seen what looks like spider webs in and around the live rock. I had it on about 6 or 7 peices of rock. So can anyone tell me what they think??
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt
There are a couple of things that come to mind when you say spider webs......Spaghetti worms, Sponges, and some other type of worms that form odd shapes on my glass, i think on the rock too but its more noticeable on the glass....but geez who knows what it could be....wouldnt happen to have a pic of your web wouldja? are they white? how big are they?
Rocky
scubadude,
Its kinda white in color and looks like stringy stuff, sorry no picture. I will see what i can do on the picture, I have only seen it a few times, and it only sticks around for a day or so...Could it be from the fish? Fertilizing?
Matt
do you have any corals? Some corals are known to spew out mucus...some even in strings...like Toadstools (which could look like a web)...this is done and then they are drawn back in , and thats how they pick up food in the water column.
Rocky
The only thing I have are some green mushrooms, gonapora, and a feather duster. about 60 pounds of live rock...
THANKS,
Matt

it's probably something that hitchhiked in on the live rock that is spewing that stuff out. if you can isolate the area on the rock it is coming from, you might be able to watch for whatever it is.
agreed. Some things like vermetid snails as well also release mucosal webbings in an effort to trap food. Its quite reminiscent of a spider web. The "snails" are calcium tubes with 2 small antannae protruding out and then the net will come out much further..could be one of these..they are harmless and common
