Powerheads: how many do you have?

I have 4 mini's that push about 450GPH. I have noticed some people just use 1 giant PH. I was think of doing this mainly because the small cups on the mini's constantly come undone and to get rid of all the wires and clutter in the tank. Whatcha think?

mrok,
I have been working on something similar to what you have.I am trying to use a MAG9.5, but I'm not having very good luck with it.I would like some suggestions if yo could give them.

I used all 3/4inch PVC with three outputs.THe current coming out of them is not strong at all.Would you suggest using smaller outputs or just a biggger pump?

This is on a 75g.I'm trying to get rid of the 6-powerheads I have in there right now.I know that I will not get the same water movement out of the MAGdrive as I do out of all the powerheads but I think it should be stronger than what it is now.

Thanks

I would do the following.

1. cap off one outlet. I only have two of the three I have opened.

2. Get a mag 12/18 if this does not help and run keep the mag 9.5 hooked up as well.

To much flow...no such thing!

mork12,
Are you using a Mag 12 with 3/4" PVC? Would it be safe to say your getting close to 1200 gph through that setup?

Golfish,

I am using a mag 18 and I think I am getting close to 1800 GPH from it. After my wedding anniversary ( going on a cruise!) I plan on getting a larger cirulation pump ( likely an ampmaster) and then I will have real flow. I am going to use it in combination with the current mag 18 to really stir things up so to speak.

Hi MROK12!

Is it that your not happy with the performance of the MAG18 or that it is not enough for your 120? I jut picked one up for my upcoming ~75 gallon which is why I ask.

The mag 18 rocks. I just want a better circulating pump. I am using a mag12 right now. I want to get a larger pump also because can use it when I set up my dream tank. L 8 ft D 4 ft H 2 ft. It will be close to 600 gallons. But this mag 18 is great. here is a pic of he flow.

Thanks! I am figuring the MAG18 to be more than enough on my ~75, eliminating any need for powerheads in the tank. I am wondering if I should opt for T'ing it off 2 or 3 times. Any thoughts?

On one of the pics there is a long pipe running down the left side of the tank is that the inlet? and what is the T'd connection on the right its covered so I'm thinking it is an inlet for something.??

Little Devil and I have very similar setups we both run 2 Aqua clear 300's and 2 402 Powerheads with a couple of smaller pumps here and there. I figure we move around 1400 GPH total in our 135's. Trouble is we both get a "oil Slick" on top of the tank every once in awhile. What is the likely cause ? It looks like a film and sometimes hold tiny bubbles under it. I know it can't be good and I made a make shift surface skimmer and attached it to one my AQUA Clears and it was gone in a matter of an hour or so. Any Ideas on what that is and does that setup provide good flow? Thanks, Mike

No Power heads. I use 4 - 3/4" Sea Swirls driven by a Dolphin Aqua Sea 4500. IMO they are not that noticeable across the back of the tank.

Regards,
Kevin

even though my 220g has an AM3k on a closed loop and a dolphin2100 on the return I still have 4 MJ1200's on a wavestrip....I dont think more current would hurt either.
