I need to start stocking my 75gal reef with fish(I lost all my fish making a switch to a DSB last month). I am going to order two false percs and a small hippo tang.
Question: Will I have problems adding smaller fish later on? In addition to these three fish I would like to add a few gobies and some green chromis. Thanks, BigA |

ok just to warn you....the hippo tang is, please someone correct me if im wrong but i recall hearing this, the most prone to diseases. i believe hlle is the one its most prone to. not sure exactly why but i remember hearing its not the easiest one to care for. clowns by reputation are hardy even though mine died in less than 24 hrs today one of many clowns that have died on me. i cant afford to shell out another 17 dollars for clowns any more....chromis are good ones as are gobies. make sure you dont over crowd your tank if you do get the hippo tang. he'd be the one i'd try and work around. good luck

The Hippo Tang is one of the less aggresive tangs. It is prone to contracting ich and other skin parasites and like fishguy_8 said it is very susceptible to HLLD and fin erosion. They are usually shy and like to have places to hide. Hope this helps. I have been thinking of getting one for my reef aswell. Hope this helps.

My hippo tang is a very mild fellow. He never bothered a new fish regardless of its size. As far as disease prone--they're just like the whole tang family. Plenty of green stuff, Selcon and Zoe, good clean water, and stress-free environment keeps them bright and healthy.

My Hippotang has a ton of personality...Likes to follow all the fish around, very care free and friendly. He wont bother a thing, but they are very curious... As for the disease thing, mine got sick a few times but always pulled through without me having to isolate him. A healthy tank makes a happy fish. I swapped out my CC for a DSB not too long ago on my 155,I didnt loose anything.Just make sure you're prepared with plenty of containers, new water and a powerhead and heater (the water cools off quick once it's out of the tank) I did,nt even remove all the fish and the tank was clear within 2 hours...

Hippo Tangs are the best! We had one and he/she would always "pal around" w/ our Emperor. They were inseparable. They do have delicate constitutions though. We had ours for about 6 months. He was growing nicely, eating well, no health problems until a Brooklynella outbreak took him and our Emperor. We will get another one. They've such animated personalities.

Mike,
I think it might have been an O2 problem...With all that white film on the water and my skimmer shut off. Green Mariner, I checked out your Hippo page and I think I'm going to skip the hippo tang. The fish is being sold as small wild caught fish, I don't think it would do very well in my tank. Thanks everyone, BigA [This message has been edited by BigA (edited 06-01-2001).] |

BigA,
I have had my Hippo tang now for about 2 month after searching around for a heathly one. This will be in my opinion something you muslook for when you make your purchase of a Hippo to make sure he is eating and heathly looking meaning stocky and ich free. I must say that when I added him to my 125gal with my yellow tank the Yellow tang did not want to accept him for about one week but my hippo still insisted to eat no matter what. both my tangs are doing awesome they eat like pigs but the hippo is one of my favorite fish. One more thing if you get the hippo I would STRONGLY suggest getting two cleaner shrimps to clean off any perisites they might get. Always prepair for the worst at the least point of time. reef120

Hippos are beautiful. Mine hid for the first two weeks and hardly ate and got ich. Now after 3 months it is doing well. Eating everything. Does not bother the other fish. It gets startled with any sudden movements around the tank and hides in the rocks.
Good fish. Karun |
