Feeding the SPS reef

What do people feed their SPS reefs? I am thinking of trying this to supplement the nutrition of these corals.

I have ordered some of the following

Coral Accel
Coral Vital
Essential elements
Aragamilk

Anyone have a source for rottifers, Artemia naupuli, golden pearls ( I think)

ANy home recipes out there?

I always fed one of the brands of phyto; alot of people prefer DT's. Golden Pearls are also popular.

I used to feed DT's and Golden pearls but I stopped about 6 months ago. Thats stuff was nasty on my tank. I only feed the fish (3-4x a week) and see no difference at all.

Homemade cultures the only way to go!

Live nanno (phyto) and Live Rotifers! Easy, cheap, and the best, and most natural and healthy IMO for reefs. MROK Im haveing much better success w/my clams now that im feeding more phyto to the tank....and im actually target feeding them phyto I might even start eventually taking all the clams out and putting them in a large bowl drenched w/phyto like once a week.

for all your live culturing needs check out www.florida-aqua-farms.com

stuff you need from FAF
1 nannochloropsis disk (sp?) this is your actual phytoplankton $8.50
1 small bag of Live Rotifers $10.00
1 bottle of macro algae grow (this is the food for the phyto) $5.20
1 bottle of roti-rich (this is an enhancement for rotifers)$3.00

hardware needed from your LFS
some rigid airline tubing (3 sections should be enough) $3
some airline tubing (i just get like a 10-15' roll) $5
a fairly nice air pump, like a tetra $10-15
a 4-6way gangvalve $4

Other stuff needed
4-6 2litre bottles (u can buy the cheap soda for $.99 ea ) Clear ones
1 2' NO flourescent strip (they are about 10-15bux at hardware store)

So about 50-60 bux you have a complete culturing setup! and if you do it correctly you will never have to buy phytoplankton again, in essence

Other things I recommend from FAF:
**plankton culture manual**
Brine shrimp cycst
algae density measurers
they really have ALOT of kewl stuff....and you will probably want to buy more and more the more involved you get w/culturing, and the more you learn culturing. IMO culturing is very easy to start doing but is one of the first steps in advanced reefing, and you can get into it as deep as you want. I cannot believe the growth rates, and health status of my system ever since I started feeding live phyto and rotis!

Its quite easy...just go ahead and order the plankton culture manual from FAF too....it shows how to do everything basically! Also if you have or can get the book Clownfishes by Joyce Wilkersons, that book is great for culturing rotis, and phyto, and brine.....but the culture manual from FAF is much better from what I hear....I havent gotten it but it will show you how to culture pods, brine, rotis, phyto....etc etc. I think I posted it in your other thread but here is an awesome thread that shows Ken setting up a 24/7 phyto dripping reactor....this is something that I predict being big in the future but nobody has really done it yet except Ken aka Mustang.

Scuba I oreded the supplies and have gegun drinking down extra 2 liters (LOL) I have assembled everything I need but I am going to set it up like Flame angels set up. That looks pretty simple. Thanks for all the info.

On a side note. My aquacultured Tonga corals will be here in 2-3 weeks. The "Farmers" just took 800 cuttings and mounted them tweo weeks ago. I guess it take 4-5 weeks to get a good base going. They grow them out in the lagoon. They will be 2-3 inches I am told and will be very colorful Acropora sp. I ordered a box of them with some purple ricordea and other tonga mushrooms and softies.

this gives me time to get this live food mart up!!!!

golden pearls (smallest size)

most of these foods are for the LSB which in turn feeds the corals

cheers,
Joe

* I noticed some feed coral vital and other trace elements.

you might wanna read Dr. Ron's new article concearning toxic buildup of trace elements.
