Frag A Leather Coral??

I have a very healthy Leather Coral. What are the steps I need to take t propogate it. It is getting large for my 55g tank and I would like to share it with others.

If anyone has any Xenia and can tell me how to crop the leather, I would love to trade.

Ryan

hey ryan

Fragging a leather isnt too hard to do....just get a nice clean/sharp razor and cut the leather where you want, I would definately try and do this OUT of the tank if possible because the leater will slime alot, and you may want to have a bucket of tank water (a couple of drops of iodine in this bucket wont hurt either) on hand for the frag to dropinto and rinse the frag/mother colony off good with the bucket of tankwater real good before putting both back into the tank. I actually sew my leather frags to LR pieces with holes in them then put them in low flow areas until they attach themselves to the rocks, and you can cut the thread if you want after that or they will grow over it.

Hey if you want to meet other reefers in your area check this out

I have two very large leathers in my tank that I frag regularly -- they are attached to rocks that cannot come out of the tank so I don't have the luxury of having a bucket like Scubadude. They slime pretty good, but I frag right before a water change.

I just use my tank scissors (new, sharp pair of scissors) and cut small pieces off the leathers... Sometimes superglue will hold them to rocks, sometimes I rubber band them. I'll have to try the sewing trick.

Leathers

My leather does its own propagating. About once a week it will cut a piece of itself off. It just started doing this when I moved to a apartment in a city from a house in the country last November. I have about 10-16 frags (lost count)! Enentually I will get rid of them but for now they are my babies.

Hi Chris Lakies!

I merged the thread you started by accident into this one.
