I think that the zenia that I just bought is dying. Have had 3 days and it is not looking to well. First 2 days it was up right and moving with the current of the tank. Today it is droopy and only a few of the "stems" are up right. I read that they can release toxins when the dye. Is this true. If so How can I tell if it is dead or dying. If dying should I just get rid of it? I know lots and lots of questions |

Hi poorkat, Welcome to Reefland!
It would be best to post your question about your Xenia sp. in a new thread for a better response. ![]() |

Green to Brown Star Polyps
Hey everyone! New to your group. My 75 gallon reef went through an ordeal about 2 months ago when an ice storm past through and I lost electricity for 3 days. To keep the tank warm I kept many candles lite, which kept the room temperature at a constant 72 degrees. However, I could not keep the tank water circulated and I lost half the corals.
Before the ice storm knocked out the electricity, my large green star polyps were a brilliant green. It took two weeks after the storm before the green star polyps reappeared. I didn't lose a single polyp but instead of the beautiful green color the entire colony is brown ! What caused the radical color change? Will the green color return? Does this color change from green to brown relate directly to the algae living within the polyps? There was a minimum nitrate spike after the ice storm from the dead corals but it only registered at 12 for only one day. My tank has been completely stable since then within these parameters: 75 gallon tank, calcium 425, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia at zero, phosphates at zero, temp 73 degrees, use Kent Calcium buffer part A and part B, refugium, corals are star polyps, frogspawn, green toadstool, wood polyps, clove polyps, 7 inch derasa clam, 4 inch crocea clam, devils finger, candy cane, rose brain, ricordia, meat polyp, button, sps jewel rock......lights are 5 watts per gallon by Current. Thanks for your help !!! |

Hi watercreature, Welcome to Reefland.com!
I would like to comment on your temperature of 73 degrees. This is very, very low for a tropical reef tank. Reef tanks are normally maintained ~80 degrees F; you might want to do some research on tank temperatures and consider slowly adjusting. ![]() |

Green to Brown Star Polyps
Thanks for the welcome.......much appreciated. Thanks for your suggestion of researching tank temperature. I lived in Florida for 3 years and did a lot of scuba diving. The water temperature fluctuated throughout the year from the low 70's to the mid 80's. So I was never concerned about my reef tank being at 73 degrees. I will definately learn more about temperature. By the way, I enjoyed your photos of your 75 aquarium reef....very cool !

Acoropora with power compacts?
Hey fellow reefers! I pretty much have only LPS in my 75 gallon tank. I have only one SPS which is a Jewel Rock. It is growing and doing great! I have been told that my lighting is not intense enough for other SPS corals. I have eight 96 watts power compact over my tank.....is there any possibly way I could add SPS to my current set up? Water parameters are great and very stable.....Thanks for your help !

![]() I think you have enough light to sustain quite a few species of so called "sps" corals. You can easily keep Montipora digitata and even some Acroporids if you can keep them on the top of rock structure. There is a lot more to keeping those corals than just lighting, though. Tank's stability and maturity plays an equal part as well as strong lighting when you talk "sps". And lets not forget that most of those corals need pretty strong water flow in the tank too... I'd recommend starting with a Montipora digitata, they are quite hardy and grow pretty rapidly as well.

I am new to reefland and to forums in general. I had a 55g fish only tank for several years, moved and would like to start again with a larger (100+) reef tank. Any advice on lighting, filters etc. would be great.

Damn. I'm busted. Yes, unfortunately that is a Wal-Mart. You can't go anywhere in Louisiana, Mississippi, etc without seeing one. I had to go and pick up some snakcs, soft drinks, etc. before the Mardi Gras parades. |
