You said to say Hi

So Hi all. New member from Canada and look forward to participating on this board. Limited supply - like none- reef supplies and livestock where I live so have to rely on mail order and trips to larger centers but that's OK!
So hello from the North!

Well I find there is good and bad to most places that I have lived. You can dress for the cold and even tho at times it does get to be a bit much there is always tropical vacations in the winter! The good is soooo good up here though - lots of space - Northern Lights - deer, moose, bears, elk, etc. etc. that wander through my yard - and the Northern Rockies are just spectacular!

Well h _ _ _ ! Now I know which part of Canada you're living. I love The Rockies !!! The summer of '96, I took my 16yr. old Daughter ( Beth ) To Creed, Co. We spent the summer horseback riding the Great Divide. We had a horse farm here in Ga. with plenty of horses, but we bought mountain born and raised stock so we could ride the elk trails on the Divide. There is NOTHING like riding an elk trail @ 14,000 feet on a trail as wide as your hand ( except a nice reef tank ). On the left side, straight down for 2-3k ft., on the right the mountain continues to rise. But the Elk won't let you herd them like on the cattle drives we went on. We helped the local ranchers herd their cattle into the high mountain valleys for summer pasture. We participated in about 20 drives. Made coffee on the trail with pure mtn. water coming out of a rock. It was true cowboy coffee, because they threw the grounds in the water and let'er boil. Then drop 1/2 cup of cold mtn water on top to settle the grounds. Trout fishing, beaver dams with busy beavers, and The Four Corners. You could spreadeagle on the ground and have your hands and feet ALL in different states. AWESOME SUMMER !!!

On Christmas Day, after we were there, it was 60* below 0. Ga. was pretty nice at 62* above 0.

What are your tank specs., reef/fish, reef only, a Newbie(?) ? If you need any hard to find items, I know online a lady in Ca. that can get you just about anything in captivity.

Well this thread was meet & greet so we got're done.

Regards,

P.S. I met a guy online that said " I' ve been keeping reef tanks 25yrs. and I'm a Newbie ". I told him " Well compared to YOU I'm not even a twinkle in my Daddy's eye ".

WOW 60 below - we don't get that cold up here -40 every once in a while. I have horses as well and love to go riding and used to rodeo but too old and brittle now so just enjoy getting rid of my tensions on the back of a good horse now. I love reef tanks but my first love is my horses.

Hi everybody...New guy here, just found the site and it looks real nice.

I'm Dan, been in reefing a little less than 2 years, but have become seriously ill with the addiction. I started with a 55 reef, but have upgraded. I am involved with fragexchange.com, went to IMAC, going to MACNA

My system has been up almost 9 months now: just started adding livestock 3 months ago, let the sand and rock grow in, when i had to scrape off the coralline to see inside, i started adding livestock

150 indopacific back reef: mostly sps, some lps, anthias, 2 clowns, 2 bta's (cloning), 1 maxima (was a rescue, but a trial to see how i did: its growing )
moderate flow with a tunze and manifold return, looking to add a second tunze unit
lighing by 3x 175watt MH - 20K (gonna switch to 10K) and 2x72" actinics

120 lagoon, sea grass and dsb, to house seahorses (a temporary hold of a picasso trigger destroyed my seagrass bed, but am rehabbing it .... pair of cb erectus coming in late september from a breeder...plan to house gorgonians and 1-2 gobies, otherwise a nice 120 cube tank will house the herd to slowly grow

100 sump with dsb and macro harvested weekly with lighting 24 hours/day
return to the sump is by a pump at constant level, sucks air a bit...but makes my sump a large skimmer, all the air bubbles collect the yuck, i scoop out a ton every week...my 2 skimmers don't pull much out surprisingly
I currently do auto topoff with RO/DI and small amount of Kalk- my system is just starting to use the calcium heavier to need supplement; i try to do weekly, sometimes biweekly water changes of 50 gallons (i have a 96 g resevoir of ro/di and 55 g of freshly mixed saltwater)

Parameters:
pH: 8.1-8.2
Specific gravity: 1.024-1.025
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: <2.5
Phosphate: 0
Alkalinity (slightly low)
Calcium 375-400

I have all diy/used stuff and my behind the scenes looks horrible, but i think the tank is finally starting to grow in. the 120 is just coasting along until the ponies come

have to plumb in a second 100gallon tub for coral grow out...my small shelf in the 150 is too full

I dont have tons of time to surf the forums, but try at least once a week. Always interested in swapping frags and learning as much as i can

nice meeting you all and look forward to chatting

Dan

Hi Y'all!

I'm a lurker who is always looking for tips.

I run a 37 gallon reef tank, built into a wall between the kitchen and the den. The filters and lighting are for the most part, custom (home) made.

This is my second reef tank. I had one set up a decade ago but had to take it down. Sad day that was, taking all the livestock back to the store....

Anyway, I didn't clense myself of the yen for Salt and so I am back at it again!

I am having a problem with my endochrins. I can't seem to keep them happy and they always end up going to the great nitrogen cycle in the sky.

Any suggestions?

Have been in the hobby for about 5 years

I am 20 years old

I have a 65 gallon flat back hex tank (old school oceanic) 2 10 gallon refuges, one mangrove, one grapes and chateo, suncoast 125 wet/dry converted into berlin/ sock sump, eco needle wheel 125 protein skimmer, return is rio 2200, multiple seio power heads, 4" sand bed with plenum 70 lbs live rock raised above sand bed by a few pieces of hidden pvc, two 175 watt hqi metal halide pendants, with 2 65 watt and 2 65 watt actinics with 4 leds, made by current, halides are 12" above surface pcs are on top of half of a glass top,

fish: 2 yellow tail damels, mated pair ocellaris clowns (wild), 2 convict wormfish/goby, 1 redsea emperor angel, 2 cleaner shimp, 2 brittle stars, about about 70 red leg hermit crabs, 25-30 zebra turbo snails, 15 nasarius snails, 2 sand sifting stars, 3 emerald green crabs, multiple types of mushroom ployps, zoos, and xenia, leathers and 1 gaint purple carpet anemone have never been able to correctly identify it, 1 chevron tang that was recently given to me by someone that could no long take care of their tank for finacial reasons, sad day when that happens to a fellow reefer. eventually will DIY some bigger tanks and do sps and lps and clams. I am currently drawing up plans for a saltwater pond also.

I love predators and my tank used to be one but I need to support my reef keeping so I sell my frags to my boss when I am strapped for some cash.

Hobbies are soccer, reefkeeping, scubadiving I think just about every reefer is atleast certified at some lvl or other of diving.

srry I can't give any pictures no digital camera or scanner.

Mornin' from Canada...

I wonder what the occurence ratio is if we compare the number of certified divers with those who run this hobby. It has got to be pretty close to one.

I got certified in the early 70's. My best dive was in the Dominican Republic in the 80's. My daughters have only just been certified. We are planning to hit the Mayan Coast in 2007. I hear Cozumel is an amazing dive.
