This is so cool cuz I think the lawnmower blenny has one of the best characters of any fish.
I thought it was a goner because it had gotten so skinny having not enough algae to eat. I couldn't believe it when I saw it aggressively chasing down prepared foods as it passed by a couple of days ago. This after being in the tank for about a year and a half! Today I even hand fed it and it just sat there on top of a squamosa picking from my fingers. It isn't scared at all and I could have practically touched it. Just about the best news to come from my tank! So for those of you experiencing the same with their blennies getting emaciated - don't give up. ------------------ John Susbilla Visit my "Flashy" new site: John's Reef Flat Alternate site Here tubs@firstworld.net |

Weird, I wonder if it is something in the air. Ours is now eating prepared foods after over a year. It got emaciated in the 58 when we kept it clean, so we left the glass filthy for a couple of months. Now in the 140 it is eating everything from brine to squid. Nough about mine, congratulation on yours!

Hi Doug,
Yeah I thought mine was a sure goner in a matter of time. You could already see it's backbone showing through. I guess the hunger strike is over. ------------------ John Susbilla Visit my "Flashy" new site: John's Reef Flat Alternate site Here tubs@firstworld.net |

Jmick,
Turn off all pumps and fans so that the surface is as still as possible. Then just stoop down low and shoot at an angle towards the surface. Try to find the best composition and just shoot. You can either focus on the surface mirror or the corals themselves (depending on your distance from the subjects) ------------------ John Susbilla Visit my "Flashy" new site: John's Reef Flat Alternate site Here tubs@firstworld.net |

Hey Tubs, I just wanted you to know that after I read 'lawnmower blenny is eating" story I got curious to see if would make a good tank mate in my 60gal reef. I too think the lawn blenny is a neat fish w/ its own little personality! So I'm going to go and get one this weekend Thanks Tubs! Any recommendations on what to look for?

i saw the algae blenny in a store and just had to have one.. my guy is great and has great personality.. his name is Oscar...like the guy from Sesame Street..cuz he looks similar... my guy eats all day and leaves kiss marks on the algae on the glass..
he never has bothered anyone in my 55 gal reef..and i think makes a great addition to the tank..so my vote is that everyone should get one....just one thing...i think they can get pretty big.. mine has gone 1 1/2 times his size in about 3 months..!! see ya on the reef sometime....!! |
