the thing I just don't get about maximas
Here's what I don't get about Maxima clams,
how come some of them are called "super maxima" and some are "ultra maxima" and some are just plain old "maxima"  TIA valonia sp. |

it all depends on the color of the clam. The more vibrant the more expensive. So the more vibrant the color is it get the so called name super, ultra..etc. Barry would have a better explination on this.

I have not heard the term super used for maximas. Super is used with croceas. IME when a retailer, wholesaler and importer order clams they are given three types to choice from ultras, colored and golds. The golds start out as the less amount $$$, then the colored and then the ultras. Ultras have large patches of color in their mantle. Colors have stripes and small patches, but this is a general rule.

reef101 hit it on the head. They are more vibrant
than the 1st grade clam but then again a Black tiger is considered to be a 1st grade clam and they can run fairly high in price as they are a little harder to fine. Supply and demand. Barry |
