Whacky tank problem, no joke it IS a marine

A picture is a thousand words

Looks like dinoflagellates to me. Could be phto in source. Are you feeding phyto? ANyway this is my recommendation. Do a water change or two or three. Get a UV sterilizer today!!!! Do not get anything smaller than 25 watts though. You really need that much for it to be effective with parasites and such. Anything less is simply not effective. You are looking for contact time as well. I have a friend who holds a masters in aquatic life support systems and he worked it all out on paper for me when I got the UV for my 50 breeder FW planted tank. It is not the volume of water that is important at all. 25 watts is the least he recommends and he recently finished designing the life support system for a new aquatic exhibit at our local zoo. So I am passing on his wisdom to you.

Thanks he got a really good Uv and he has done multiple water changes, I think about 10-15 water changes in total, it just keeps comming back. Apparently all his readings were normal. I was apparently reading an older post and the guy has done a 100 percent water chane, rip down and start up and the problem has disapeared. He tried everything poor guy. Thanks for comments.

If there is no live stock in there yet, he could turn the lights of for a couple of days and then when he bings them back do it at minimum lighting for only a few hours a day meanwhile he needs to be doing water changes(with good clean water) to get his nutreints under control. This worked for me. And I agree with the use of a UV and a skimmer to help remove it.The same thing happened to me during the end of the cycle when I set up my second tank. HTH

Well, your first mistake is that obviously you are using our pond water! Every morning the water level is down and we have to drag the hose over and add more. We thought it was too much for just evaporation, but now we know you've been taking our green water and putting it in your fish tank. Well that explains a lot. So what can be gleaned from all this? Ill gotten water taken in the dark of night may be........................Oh well, crime doesn't pay!

Send a message via AIM to icemark
yeah I would check the bulbs for age, and reduce the lighting cycle to the absolute minimum for anything alive in there for a couple of weeks.

Also I am assuming you don't have any Caulerpa that could have gone to seed... if you have any Caulerpa in there you may wish to remove it to your hospital tank, until you can clear the tank.

I don't think my tank went that green but I was doing water changes everyday. The only thing that worked was to hook up a 25w sterilizer so the outlet of the sterilizer went into my skimmer. In three days my water was clear and has stayed clear. I spent three weeks doing everything else before getting the UV. I no longer run the UV but if it happens again I'll have it.
