    Southdown Sand in Michigan

Just some info for anyone in Michigan.

I have been looking for Southdown sand lately at the local HD and such but have had no luck. I found a LFS in Kalamazoo called:

    http://www.thereefshop.com/

and he is selling a 40 lb. bag for $5.99 right now. I called and asked if he keeps it in stock or if it was a special deal and he said that they are the "exclusive" dealer for southdown in Michigan.

I don't know if this is fact or fiction but i thought it may be helpful.

According to his website he's selling 40-lb bags for $9.99, not $5.99. I have a difficult time understanding what he means by "exclusive" dealer since Southdown is not even supposed to be sold for use in marine aquariums.

I would guess that he either ordered a few pallets of the stuff from somewhere on the east coast or he has a friend in the trucking business.

I recently read a thread where someone had their local HD transfer some from a KY HD. On a few occasions, it was in Louisville, I don't know which one it was coming out of though.

    Just an FYI,

I got mine from the home depot down the street from the ref shop for 2.99 a bag. They are not selling it anymore. I have not problems with my sand bed from using it either or in my tank. Maybe I have been lucky? I got it when southdown was the way to go. 10.00 a bag though is steep!!

    Thumbs down What?

I know where you live. The gas for the trip to K-zoo just to buy this southdown would make up for what you save in expense! You might as well get a good name sand and not have to worry about killing whatever you put in your, "tank to be".

So shut your pie hole and get on with building your tank!

    Re: What?

    Chris,
I tend to agree with you as my LFS here in Michigan sells agranite and some type of sonoma pink sand for $22.00 - $25.00 per 40 pound bag. So I did drive down to look at this Reef Shop and he has at least 8 pallets of the stuff and at $10.00 bucks a bag vs the above prices not bad. Picked up 5 bags for my 90 and consider it cheap.
