how many clams do you have? sizes? how much dt's do you feed? how often do you feed? me, i have a 4" derasa, 5" squamosa, and 2.5" crocea. i feed them 2tsp of dt's every other day and keep the skimmer off for about two hours when i do feed them.

I am interested in this too. I have a 3" max, 4.5" max, 5" max, 4" squamosa, 8" derasa, full tank of LPS and softies. The tank is 75 gallon and I've been feeding 30ml of DT's twice a week. I leave the skimmer off for about 4 hours.

I feed my clams everyday. The lights come on about 10am and go off about 8pm........I see no reason to feed em anything but light and what the filter form the tank. You can't target feed em unless you remove them from the tank.

If you have a fairly large fish load and feed good the clams will filter the food from the water as well as the waste from the fish.
The parical must be very small about 1-2 microns is best. Have been doing some work on feeding baby clams by feeding them everyday a very small portion apposed to not feeding and the ones that I feed daily are serviving. A company has contacted me and sent me a lot of literature of different kinds of phytoplankton and I am going to use different products in different tank to see if I can tell the difference if any. Dr. Ron Shimek has a GREAT artical about phytoplankton and clams. I will try to located to link and post it. I believe I have it on on link page on web site. In the last couple of weeks I have stop using DTs and switch to Liquidlife. In my 120 gallon tank I have one 16 inch gigas and several maximas. I feed 4 squirts everyother day and I have seen no plus or minus results as compared to DTs. Now I have seen major improvement with the corals in the tank. I do believe that the Liquidlife product is less $$$ and easy (smaller container) to ship. It has to be stored in the freezer. In my 65 gallon tank which houses a couple dozen croceas and maximas the same is true! In this size tank I add 2 squirts. This addition is done by taking a cup of the tank water and squirting the product into the cup. Stir then add back to the tank. The company is out of Southern CA (semi close) to Barry at Clams Direct.

Jim,
Edward gave me some of that to try and I couldn't really see any difference in the clams. I have not used it with my corals so can't say anything regarding that. One of Steve Tyree's old reef farmers that lives here in San Diego has told me that he hasn't ever been able to keep clams successfully but since he has restocked and started using DT's he hasn't lost a clams in several months. Another company has contacted me as they see that I sell DT's so want me to try their new product with the clams. Dt's is about 2 micron in size and this is suppost to be 1 -1.5 microns and more of the brown algae that clams like. When I get it I am going to use it in one one my tanks and ask a few select people to try it as well and see if there appears to be any difference. Barry |
