Reddish Algae

Hi All,
Over the past few weeks I have been getting these small batches of what appears to be a reddish type algae. It is fuzzy and when I squeese it it feels meshie or like a think brillo bad. I know that this is not cyano.
Does anyone know what it is called and how it came to be, or why it came to be?

Thanks,
CaptK

Can you post a photo of it? Cyano (Red Slime) algae is slimey and slippery, and yours sounds like something different. A picture would help a lot.

So can this be confirmed as turf algae?
Is it anything I should start freaking out about or will it go on its own.
What causes it to grow?

THanks,
CaptK

I'm pretty sure it's the same stuff I have. I've had it for about 9 months now. My tangs eat it but not as fast as it grows. I'm pretty sure it fueled by high levels of DOC's. A refugium full of macro algae seems to be helping for me. I have had to feed heavily because of the new fish I've added. It's a real PITA.

Best of Luck,
Kevin

I just discovered the same stuff. I'm having a bit of a problem with green turf algae on a couple of rocks in the reef tank. So I decided to make a switch with a rock in the FOWLR to see if my tangs/angels would nibble at it. On close inspection, I see there is almost as much red turf as green. I wouldn't mind if it just wouldn't reach plague proportions. Sorry, I don't know of a way to control the tenacious stuff.

well at least it looks kinda cool.... I've never seen that b4 either. Do you have a tang or hermits that seem to eat it...

So after having that turf covered rock in the FOWLR for 3 days, it is almost clear--neatly mowed, anyway. Trouble is, once I get more corals in the reef tank, I can't just switch rocks around easily. I think the green and red turf algae is pretty, but I can see where it could become a plague.
