    Unidentified Brown Menace

My 37 gal FOWLR has been up for almost 3 yrs now and continues to be a very successful tank. I have approx. 50lbs of LR...a Condy Anemone..flame angel and yellow tang. Lately though, my rock and glass has become dusted with a brown covering, looks like a thick coating of dark brown dust. My tank is skimmed 24/7 using a Remora Pro skimmer, I use 40watts of total light...one a actinic, the other a 10k. I perform 25% water changes a week. This started happening after one of two of my MaxiJet 900s took a dump on me. Could this be cause by less cuurent in my tank? Maybe light spectrum? Phosphates are almost non-exsistant according to Salifert. Ph runs at a high of 8.5 to a low of 8.0 Im at a loss, any ideas would be appreciated......

    Hi Cajun!

If the only change has been the loss of the powerhead since you began noticing this algae, my first attempt at resolution would be replacing it and getting the current back up to what it once was.

    Just my thought,

Wish I could help but all I can do is sympathize; my tank has had the same problem for about three months. I'll be listening with you to see if anyone has other suggestions. In the mean time, I just 'dust' my rocks off at each cleaning. The 'dust' seems to be made up of very tiny organisms that are capable of moving and orange near the middle if you have light behind them.--Marsey

    Marsey,

It sounds like you may have planaria. A type of flatworm. Do a search to see if that sounds like what you have.

    regards,
