    Tank for clams

Here is a photo of my tank setup - what used to be my dinning room. I pick this tank because it is not deep - 15 inch - so you can view from the top.

If you count carefully, there are 27 clams. There is room for 2 or 3 clams from Barry. Maybe more if I move some corals around.

    Talking

    Totally cool!!!

Lookit all those clams! I have 2 questions for you:
    1) about how many gallons is that?

    2) tell me more about the light fixture -- what kind of bulbs and am I correct in that it's on a pedestal like a floor lamp. Where did you get it?? (something like that would be great for me... thus all the questions.)

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tank is 150 gallons, 3 feet x 5 feet x 15 inch height. I use Ecosystem refugium (forgot the model #) - see the lighted area under tank. Together with sump - I'm probably running under 190 gallon.

Light fixture is Aquaspace light, 2 x 250 watt HQI metal halide and PC actinic. Fixture is hanging from a steel bar - that is attached to the frame that supports the tank.

This is a custom tank that I aquired from a vendor - I thought it is a perfect tank to house clams for viewing from top. Several times a day I would turn off pump to view the clams.

Barry - you can help my tank look nicer by stocking my tank with more clams! I'm waiting on T. gigas and others that we discussed.

Very nice tank. I am thinking of my next tank being shallow and viewable from the top. Not quite that big but it gives me a good idea.

Thanks Gene. It was not a terribly difficult decision. We often eat by the TV, or breakfast table. Dinning room is rarely used. Since placing the clam as the center piece, the new 'clam' room is visited many times daily.

That is exactly my dream clam tank. I showed my other half the pic and I got a very nice smile and "thats very nice dear" as she walked out. I have officially planted the seed....muhahhahahahah . Since I had the horrible clam killing disease this summer I am unwilling to plop these beautiful creatures into my reef system again. So a seperate clam tank is my only choice. Your design and pictures are true inspiration.
A few questions... Do you have any fish in the tank? I notice there is no live rock in the main tank but there appears to be macros and rock in the sump area, true? What about algae, any problems? How long has this been set up? Is the second container under the table a top off system? How about evaporation with an open top, how many gallons per day? I'll think of more questions but that will do for now

slojmn - thanks. I took a new picture of my favorite T. maxima group together. I like these for the color and nice patterns.

    In response to your questions

    >> Do you have any fish in the tank? I have 9 of them

2 - Gold Stripe Maroon Clown
1 - Mandarin Dragonet (Pterosynchiropus splendidus)
    1 - Scooter Blenny
    1 - Canary Blenny
    1 - Six line Wrasse
1 - Melanurus Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus)
1 - Black/Blue Fish ( no idea what it is - need to ask LFS)
    1 - Yellow Tang

    >> I notice there is no live rock in the main tank but there appears to be macros and rock in the sump area, true?

I have ecosystem setup in addition to Euro Reef skimmer in my sump.

    >> What about algae, any problems? How long has this been set up?

this tank is very new - setup since middle of September 2002
This is my first metal halide tank - I have to clean the glass every 3 days or it will have a green haze.

    >> Is the second container under the table a top off system? How about evaporation with an open top, how many gallons per day?

2nd container is my old 33 gallon fresh water tank - used for top off. It evaporates about 5 gallon of water a day. So the container last for about a week.

Added some SPS for reef scape

I got some SPS to decorate my clam tank - I think it looks pretty good. This way Barry won't comment that my tank looks like a holding tank. ;)

Peter, I think that is a AWESOME tank. It looks just like the new tank that I had custom made for my clams and soon SPS.
